#Selfcare - noun, verb, necessity. the practice of mindfulness and attention to self preservation, self protection, growth, and peace.
In my twenty something years of life, I learned the hard consequences of not taking care of self, and the permanent mantra of protect your peace. Through the business and chaos triggered by an overpacked schedule, 200+ unread emails, balancing entrepreneurship and a full time job, and finding time for friends an family has often warranted occasional breakdowns, gasping for breath, and a sometimes uncomfortable yearning to quit.
simplify your life
Feeling important, needed, and desired is great, enchanting even...but we need to want ourselves. We need to prioritize peace and healthy living, just as much as prioritize those happy hours and networking events that might lead to making the connection that opens the next door. The balancing act of chasing the dreams, and the reminders that we have the same hours in the day as Beyonce, and the realization that sleep, food, water, and meditation is important. Doing less, more meaning tasks, outweighs the thrill of businesses. Less is more never made sense...until it did.
set intentions/ meditate on every decision you make
I have been working in Corporate America 5 years now, trying to grow my career at my 9-5 and explore my goals and aspirations while nostalgically starting my own business and working my butt off trying to pitch and sell that work. It gets crazy, I've gone crazy. Choosing between slay and sleep, is not easy; but being intentional about every yes, and selective with every no can help start a beautiful and sacred space in your life, where you commit to the things that are most important to you, and you don't burn yourself out while doing it. It is important to check in about why you are doing to things you do. We really won't ever get these moments back. Time is so precious, so we should make sure we know how and why we spend it the way we do.
it's okay to be still
There will be seasons where you're not sure what sleep is, and there will be moments where you're looking around trying to figure out where all the extra time came from. Prioritize each goal, and be honest with yourself about your why's and whens. You are not in competition with anyone...not even yourself. So often I was trying to outdo myself with every move. 'Race against my personal best time' as we said in track. At the onset of thirty, Im learning that the magnitude of the 'wins' are not as important as the impact of them. Cater to yourself, your health, your love, and your peace; and see how you start to move differently. The energy and time you spend on things will be more meaningful, and your accomplishments will be more important to you.
stay gracious & be proud of the things you do
When you learn the importance of self, you will be able to value others more. Each breath you take and word of uplift that you give yourself in times of triumph and trial will then make you more in tune with the struggles of others. Fortitude is not as impactful without resilience. Press your feet down strongly, and hold your own ground; then move forward, pulling others with you as you reach your new heights.
